server /ˈsəːvə/

- a person or thing that serves
- a person assisting the celebrant at the celebration of the Eucharist
- a computer or computer program which manages access to a centralised resource or services in a network

The metaphor of the server passes unobserved. A server serves data for its clients through request and response protocols, its purpose being to share resources. I find it to be a very valid Romantic image of our society.

For some reason no one seems to be concerned about the cosmology of the Cloud. What are the laws that govern this large-scale structure? What is its provenance and what are its constituents? What is its value? How does it behave? How can we understand the Cloud in which our heads are in?

The uninterrupted lining of the Cloud infrastructure does not allow peeks at its internal workings. Moreover, the symbolic weight of the cloud icon inflicts an immateriality that veils its doings even more. What we can do is pushing further epistemological assumptions and wait for a ray of technological light that can illuminate our lives of material boredom.

The allegory of the Cumulus hints to a dynamic architecture of conversion imposed on our streams, whose factual materiality is becoming more and more a real power structure erected on the pillars of its data centres. The standardised 19-inch rack frame structure is becoming therefore the universal foundation of our global village.

A foundation provides a structure's stability from the ground.
A foundation is forever.

In the following entries I will rumble about my thoughts on the subject of the Cloud, random thoughts I have while riding my commute. This blog is not supposed to be research based, but rather a random diary that I feel more comfortable to write online. For some reason I was never able to write down my thoughts on paper, which I believe is kind of ironic.
I somehow feel like my research will not be just a story in chapters. It’s becoming bigger than life. And the hype around it doesn’t help with its demystification.

If Dante would be alive today, I am sure he would assign a ring to this instructional mess. The academic system is the equivalent of hell on earth. It’s the constant superior chit-chatting about everything and nothing. Shitty coffees in some underground places while talking about the latest book you must read. Small talk about the weather. The clouds coming from the ocean. Speaking of which...

Dear reader, this blog serves as maculature for what I think will become a larger block of written workings concerning the Cloud. I was assigned to do some research on the matter of the Cloud computing and spit out some knowledge about this new hype in information technology.

When I was a kid, I remember going to the beach and seeing all these kites soaring against the sky. For some reason whenever I am thinking about the Cloud, the image of those vertical threads of the kites pops in my head. Beaming lines rising from the ground. Lightning in reverse. As if the sky is sucking all the energy from the Earth, from more sources all at once.

I never liked the sea side.
